Very little about Fallout 76's control scheme was intuitive to me. They wouldnt use arrow keys, would they? They do. I couldnt figure out how to mouse over them at all. Z and C navigate menu tabs left and right, but what change values inside of that? I tried Q and E to no avail. Taking my characters snapshot was even worse. I pretty much just mouse over and mess around with various aspects of my characters face until I figure out what was doing what. The character creation process was a struggle as well. This wasnt first issue I had with the game. So I dismantled bots and started questioning whether Fallouts PC controls were always this bad. So I head back in and find that bash is set on Left ALT by default for some reason.

I peek around the corner and theyre roaming around trying to shoot me. I did a quick scan, did see melee, and got too scared to keep looking so I back out to make sure I was safe. Naturally, I want to pause, but ca So I ran behind beat up rust bucket and then tried to fight with the menu system to figure out how to bash these bots to bits. This fresh faced baby has left Vault for all of minute and ca remember what button melee was on ten years ago. I am trying to figure out how the new VATS works, and failing mind you, and sure enough I have run out of bullets. So here I am, quickly running out of 20 or so bullets I had. But me, being too focused on trying to actually fight little buggers while conserving what little ammunition nearby dead bodies give me, miss them. The game flashes some quick combat tips in my upper left hand corner. Straight out of Vault 76, I turn right and find friendly neighborhood Liberator MKIIs.

And more importantly, there is no way to safely look up controls on how to fight when youre in the middle of battle. No super slow time VATS to help you approach the deadly monster. Unlike previous games in the series, Fallout 76 is multiplayer only. Despite playing on platform before, I was utterly unprepared for what that means in a game where there is no pausing. But for Fallout 76, I 've returned to the PC.
